I went to the gas station, filled up my gas can for the lawn mower (going to mow tomorrow), and decided to fill the truck up too. The cap was harder to turn than normal. I heard a “pop”, looked down, and the gas cap handle was in my hand. The rest of the cap was still firmly attached.

After a few seconds of a “WTF” look on my face, I headed to AutoZone, got a replacement cap for $9.99, and went home. There was a central part of the cap that was mesh (a vent, I suppose). I poked a hole in the mesh, used that to get a grip on the cap remains with some channel locks and voila, crunchy old gas cap was gone.

I have honestly never heard of this. Until today, of course. My truck is a stubborn old lady in disguise, I think.

Working as a pump jockey last year, I saw a lot of vehicles with broken gas caps. And you’d be surprised to see how many didn’t have the cap on, but it was under the door anyhow. Why? PA inspection law says there has to be a gas cap on the vehicle, if there was one originally (New Fords, I think a couple others don’t have them) I think a lot of people think that if it’s still there, it counts. I’ll be honest though, even doing inspections myself I rarely check to see if there is a cap, because I usually don’t even think about it. Also because I now work at a Ford dealer so I’m used to cars not having caps.

My Neon did something really weird to me once. I live right on the coast, and in one afternoon I drove way up into the mountains to North Conway. I stopped for fuel while up there and the gas pump just would. not. pump . The cutoff would always click into place after two seconds of fueling. I had to fill the whole tank a click at a time. My best guess is that the rapid change in outside pressure messed with the vent system or the anti-siphon valve. I was not a happy camper standing there at the pump in the cold winter air for fifteen minutes.

had a similar thing happen to me years ago, but my car had a one way valve down the nozzle , it broke went down the inlet , so multiple clicks to fill , so i had that little fucker removed , problem solved.
